Species Account

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Previously very rare and of sporadic appearance in the County (YNU, 1970), Copper Underwings started appearing regularly in the late 1970s. Except for those mentioned above, all specimens examined so far have proved to be A. berbera. However, since the two species were only separated in 1968, many early specimens were submitted as A. pyramidea (Linnaeus) due to uncertainty of distinguishing them. A selection of records is given to indicate the spread and current range of the species in the County. There is no VC65 record.

Argus 47, 2001-04:
VC65. High Batts, 1983 (SPW). NEW VICE-COUNTY RECORD.

Argus 56, 2008:
VC62. Haxby, 8.9.2008 (TJC). NEW VICE-COUNTY RECORD.

2012 (CHF): There has been an increase in numbers which has been most marked since 2004 but seems to have levelled out in the last few years. Now common and widespread across the county in similar numbers to pyramidea which has been expanding at a faster rate. To separate these two species, see the comments under pyramidea.
