Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Recently restored to specific rank it has long been regarded as a form of S. ocellana (Denis & Schiffermuller) and has probably been under-recorded in consequence. The situation is further complicated in that larvae feeding in spinnings in larch needles have produced moths which are indistinguishable from S. ocellana (HEB). There is no guarantee that moths reared from larch are S. laricana, if indeed it is a distinct species.
